I have a lot of cookbooks. They're usually given to me by friends or authors, and quite often I'll find one or two recipes that catch my eye. After I've written them down, the book usually finds a permanent home in my bookcase or storage locker, never to see my kitchen again. I sense that this happens in a lot of households to a lot of cookbooks that looked good in a bookstore, but didn't look so great in people's kitchens.
No matter how many cookbooks I get, I always find myself going back to the same five cookbooks time and again. These are books that inspire my imagination in the kitchen. They challenge me to try new tastes and techniques. I learn something new every time I use them. Most importantly, these books set me up for success in the kitchen...I have yet to cook a bad meal with these recipes!
I don't think I could cook as well without them. You shouldn't have to either!

The
New Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker, Ethan Becker, la Maestro I think everyone who's starting out should start with this title. It's perfectly timeless. Basic recipes and complete explanations for every technique you need to know to get cooking. At times, I wish I still had this book. Unfortunately, I loaned it to someone and never got it back! I'll be ordering my replacement copy soon! |

Culinary
Arts Institute Encyclopedic Cookbook by Ruth Berolzheimer (Editor) This is a classic that I expect to use the rest of my life. In fact, it's a cookbook that should be handed down from generation to generation. I'm lucky enough to own two editions of this definitive encyclopedia. The copy I use is an edition from 1985 and has over 4400 recipes that I use time and again. The other copy is an antique edition I found at a garage sale. It was printed in 1949 and was in almost mint condition...including the colour photos! If you don't have it, I urge you to discover this cuisine conucopia. I'm sure you'll value it as much as I do. |

The
Complete Asian Cookbook by Charmaine Solomon I often give this book as a gift. I love asian foods. Before I got this book, I enjoyed ordering out for asian cuisine much more than trying to cook it. You know the old story..."I can never get the spices right!". This book not only gets the spices right, but it shows you how to cook virtually every delicacy that Asia has to offer! Korean Bulgogi? No problem! Indian Marsala Murgh? Piece of cake! Beijing Duck? It's there! Japanese Oyako Domburi? No sweat! Hundreds of recipes from 15 countries, all written and explained by an authority who understands that a western kitchen might not have access to all the ingredients. Beautifully photographed, this book will at the very least help you pick out something a little more adventurous the next time you eat out! |

The Complete Book of Mexican Cooking by Elisabeth Lambert Ortiz Mexican cooking is challenging, but I find that the rewards in the end are worth it. I wouldn't even have attempted it without this book at my side. This book is without rival in the field of Mexican cooking...no other Mexican cookbook can even compare! |
