When you here the word 'Sideshow' what comes to
mind?
The old days of Canvas Tents along the side of the
Midway at the Circus?
The new shows of the cabarets, pubs, and
coffeehouses?
Some of the names of the legends in the field?
Maybe you think first of the acts that were
forbidden for you to see.
Whatever you're first concept of the word is, you
surely have one. I have been performing what are
know as working acts from the sideshow for many
years and in many and varied locations. I am well
known by other performers and by many promoters as
well.
So what can I do, or do I do?
First and foremost, I DO NOT swallow swords.
Sorry, but my Ear, Nose, and Throat won't let me.
No, that's not quite true. What he said was, 'The
first time you try to put a inch and a half of
sword down an inch of throat, I'm not going to sew
you back up.' I might be crazy, but I'm not
stupid, I decided then and there not to perform
that act. This is not to say that I don't know how
to do it, for I do.
The main three acts from the category of sideshow
acts called working acts that I perform are; Fire-
Eating, The Human Blockhead, and The Bed of Nails.
Additionally, I can and have preformed; The Fire
Walk, The Glass Walk, The Electric Person, The
Iron Tongued Wonder, Knife Throwing, Snakeology,
and The Rubber Man to name but a few.
The where of the performing of these skills, is
another topic all together.
The first place you might look for me is a period
fairs and festivals. These would be events like
Medieval/Renaissance Fairs, Colonial Fairs,
Buckskinners Rendezvous, and the like. Most often,
I'm hired in to do a half-hour stage show. This I
do either alone or with a partner.
The next most likely place to find me is working
in the street. In the street, I do Fire-Eating,
the Human Blockhead, and a bit of Barstyle Magic.
From there, the range of show venues is various,
anywhere from a private event up through a
community day event held by a neighborhood group
to a first night event held by your local city.
In addition to just a straight skill show, I do
have a full evening show where in I cover the
various different forms and styles of the sideshow
and perform and present many of them for your
audience. This is a full multi-media show with
live demonstrations, projected images from days
gone by, humorous asides as to the meaning of
terms and phrases. It is a well-liked and received
show.
