Latin name: Laccifer lacca (Cateria lacca)
English name: Lac insect
Sanskrit / Indian name: Laksha

The commonest and the most widely occurring species of lac insect in India is Laccifer lacca (Kerr) which produces the bulk of commercial lac.
Lac is the resinous protective secretion of the tiny lac insect. The major constituent of sticklac is the resin (70-80%); other constituents present are: sugar, proteins, and soluble salts, coloring matter, wax, sand, woody matter, insect bodies and other extraneous matter; a volatile oil is present in traces. Lac resin is composed of mainly hydroxy fatty acids of C14- C18 carbon chains, such as aleuritic, butolic, C14-C16 mono- and di-hydroxy acids along with hydroxy terpenic acids having the rare cedrene skeleton as jalaric, laccijalaric, shellolic, and laksholic acids.
It has cooling properties, styptic, febrifuge, demulscent activities. It is used in bleeding disorders such as – menorrhagia, epistaxis, fever, chronic cough, etc.

Latin name: Lactuca serriola
English name: Lettuce
Sanskrit/Indian name: Vanya kahu

An erect leafy plant, usually prickly towards the base. The seeds yield a greenish yellow, semidrying oil. They are used for coughs and as a decoction for insomnia. The seeds are also reported to possess hypnotic and antipyretic properties.

Used in Spemen.
 
 


 
 

Latin name: Lens culinaris
English name: Lentil
Sanskrit / Indian name: Masura

A small, erect, softly pubescent herb.
The seeds contain flavonoids, kaempferol-3-a-L-rhamnopyranoside-7-O-ß-glucopyranoside and kaempferol-7-O-rutinoside, saccharides, ciceritol (manninotriose, a-D-galactopyranosyl-(1->6)- a-D-galactopyranosyl-(1->2)-4-O-methyl-chiro -inositol), D-glucose, D-fructose, sucrose, raffinose, stachyose and verbascose, and sterol, 24-methylene-25-methylcholesterol.

Used in Anti-Wrinkle Cream.
 
 


 
 

Latin name : Leptadenia reticulata
Sanskrit / Indian name : Jivani, Jivanti, Madhusrava

It's principle constituents are Leptadenol , n-triacontane, cetyl alcohol, ß-sitosterol, ß-amyrin acetate, lupanol 3-O –diglucoside and leptidin. The plant is stimulant and restorative and shows anti-bacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. 

Used in Spemen (ProstaCare), Spemen forte.

Latin name: Lilium polyphyllum
English name: White lily
Sanskrit / Indian name: Ksirakakoli

The plant is a narrow bulbous herb with few narrow subequal fleshy scales.
The bulbs are sweet, bitter, refrigerant, galactagogue, expectorant, aphrodisiac, diuretic, antipyretic and tonic. They are useful in agalatia, cough, bronchitis, vitiated conditions of pitta, seminal weakness, strangury, burning sensation, hyperdipsia, intermittent fevers, hematemesis, rheumatalgia and general disability.

English name: Iron calx

A special process makes the iron readily assimilable for the elderly. A powerful hematinic indicated in anemia, it stimulates the appetite and has a general vitalizing effect.

Latin name: Lycopersicon esculentum
English name: Tomato
Sanskrit / Indian name: Raktamaci, Tamatar
 

An unarmed, spreading, pubescent herb with a strong characteristic odor and greyish green, curled, unevenly pinnate leaves, cultivated throughout the world for its fruit.

Tomato contains folic acid, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin K and inhibitols which are related to vitamin E. The principal organic acid present in the tomato fruit is citric acid. Carotenoids, ß- carotene and lycopene, constitute the chief coloring matters of tomato. The alcoholic extract of tomato has central depressant and analgesic property.
