Search Engines For The Americas
AltaVista Canada This service operates two indexes. The Canadian-only index lists 14 million Canadian web pages, while the worldwide one is a mirror of the AltaVista index available from the main US site. The service is produced locally by Telus Advertising Services, a subsidiary of the Edmonton-based Telus Corporation, Canada's third-largest telecommunications company. Canada.com Inktomi-powered search engine, backed by Southam, Canada's largest newspaper chain. Canadian-only results are generated by filtering out all but sites within the .ca domain. AltaVista Latin America Based in Southern Europe, this site is aimed at Spanish, Portuguese and English speakers in Iberia and Latin America. The interface can be set in one of the three languages named, plus Italian and French. Orientation Latin America Searchable directory of web site relating to Latin America. Infoseek en Español Infoseek Brasil Orientation Costa Rica Searchable directory of web site relating to Costa Rica. It features BuscaWeb, a branded version of the Excite search engine. Results can be narrowed to Latin America, specific Latin American countries and Spain, via domain filtering. Yahoo en Español Spanish-language edition of Yahoo. The service lists sites from 20 Spanish-speaking countries, as well as news, business, sports and entertainment information.

AltaVista Asia Based in Malaysia. The interface is English-only, but the drop down box allows selection of character sets for major Asian languages. Sinanet.com (powered by Excite) Sinanet is popular Chinese-language web site. It features the Excite-powered SinaSearch, which allows searching in both traditional and simplified Chinese characters. SinaSearch queries an index of 1 million+ Chinese web pages, separate from the regular Excite index. Richina Search Engine - China Browse listings or search for sites in Chinese or English. Yahoo Chinese Chinese-language edition of Yahoo, containing a subset of sites of interest to Chinese speakers. The first URL describes sites with traditional Chinese characters, while the second URL describes sites with simplified Chinese characters. Editors are native Chinese speakers from China and Taiwan.
Japanese Search Engines A guide to searching with and submitting to Japanese search engines. Excite Japan Excite Japan was launched in July 1997, then became joint venture with Itochu Corporation in Oct. 1997. The partnership was created to to expand and enhance search-oriented services for the Japanese market beyond just offering a domain-filtered subset of the main Excite Search service. The Japanese edition uses LinguistX software from InXight Software to help it cope with the demands of the Japanese language. For example, spaces are not used to separate words in written Japanese. LinguistX uses a mathematical model of the Japanese language to identify word breaks. The software also recognizes different word tenses, relationships, abbreviations, contractions and can recognize phrases. EuroFerret EuroFerret crawls every domain in Europe and has indexed over 30 million pages, as of June 1998. Its interface is available in six European languages. Page language detection is planned, as is an expansion to worldwide crawling. EuroSeek A European-based search engine which nonetheless covers the globe. You can choose one of several languages, but that only affects on-screen instructions. It won’t cause results to be translated. Meta News Not a search engine but instead a newsletter in French that covers developments about search engines, with a European emphasis. It is published three times per week. Excite Germany Fireball A major search service for Germany and German-speakers. It uses a language algorithm to find German language web pages, regardless of domain. It uses AltaVista's technology to index and serve these pages to users. It had over 3 million pages listed, as of Dec. 1997. Fireball has a partnership with Microsoft to make it a default choice in the Internet Explorer 4 search pane and search page. It is the preferred service for T-Online, Germany's largest ISP, and has a bottom-of-the-page referral partnership with Yahoo's German edition. It launched June 13, 1997. Nordic Web Index Metacrawler of search engines that cover Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Greenland, the Faroes and Norway. PolarSearch A search engine that spiders Scandinavia countries. Kvasir Produced by Scandinavia Online, these are search engines for Denmark, Norway and Sweden (URLs in that order) that use AtlaVista's technology to custom crawl Scandinavian sites. A directory also lists sites by category. Jubii Search engine and directory of sites for Denmark. Lycos Switzerland Swiss Search Swiss Search crawls all sites in the .ch and .li domains, along with some handselected sites in other domains. It launched in public beta on Jan. 1996, with full service in June 1996. The Blue Window Search An index of Swiss and Liechtenstein web sites collected using AltaVista's intranet software. The index contains about four times as many pages from these countries as the normal AltaVista service, which can also be queried from this page. Interface is available in German, French, Italian and English. Blue Window search is part of the Blue Window directory of Swiss web sites.
Major Services Excite UK Excite's first regional edition. It also has an associated directory, produced in cooperation with Emap. GOD (Global Online Directory) A directory, not a search engine, but one that is well-known and which has been around since the web's early days. UK-based, but it covers the globe. Lycos UK SearchUK Automatically crawls UK-related domains and will crawl UK-oriented sites outside these domains, upon review and approval. The site had over 2 million pages listed, as of mid-1998. The site features a keyword prompter service. By selecting "Show Related Words" just above the search results, the service will present a list of alternative terms that can be used to refine a query. For web developers, the site offers meta tag support. The site launched in beta during Fall 1997, then went "official" in Feb. 1998. UKMax Powered by Inktomi, UKMax allows users to search only pages within the .uk domain or perform a worldwide search. It also offers some directory listings, regional news content, weather reports, and portal features such portfolio tracking. (more about UKMax) UK Plus UKPlus features reviews of UK-relevant sites, prepared by a team of journalists. Reviews are grouped into various channels, covering everything from Arts and Business to Travel and Work. They are also searchable. Visitors can also search unreviewed sites that are hosted on UK-domain servers, or perform a general search across the entire web. The latter two options are offered through a partnership with Infoseek. UKPlus is produced by Associated Electronic Publishing, the new media arm of the UK's Associated Newspapers (Daily Mail, Evening Standard). It launched in Jan. 1997.
