Swedish Texel Sheep!

Fårhuset Norrgårde AB (SE 3500) is a small company located in Hellvi socken (nearby Lärbro) on the island Gotland in the Baltic Sea and belongs to mainland Sweden.

On the farm we have 120 texel ewes, and of course the black Gotland sheep. Altogether we have 220 ewes, plus three bordercollies - I almost forgot them - shame on me, since I would not manage without them!

1995 the company imported
three danish texel rams from Lis and Søren Gludsted. We do sell texel ewes and breeding rams.

Our pages are aimed at the swedish market, so there are not many pages in english. But here you can have some more
information about our production, or about our stock and read about texel in Sweden. There are also some non-language related pages, with sheep-art and photos. And of course greetings in english!

If you want contact with us, use our e mail adress - and you are welcome to visit us and look at our animals - just let us know some days in advance!

There are also some pages about the village we live in, Hellvi socken, that are in english -
follow this link to take a look at them!

Sheepbreeding in Sweden is not big. 1998 there were only 179.000 ewes and rams. The swede eats only 0.7 kg lambmeat/year, and 48% of all meat is imported - mostly from New Zeeland. The average sheepfarm in Sweden has only 16 ewes, and there are only 100 farms that has over 100 animals.

On the island Gotland sheepbreeding has long traditions and is successfull. We produce so much meat that quite a lot is exported to the swedish mainland and the capitalcity Stockholm.

On the farm we do also produce a magazine on archeology, called
Populär Arkeologi, which is the main source of income.

This summer, 1999, we had almost no rain at all, so there has been very little food for the animals - but the tourists were pleased over the many days of sun. On the island lives 57.000 persons, but during summer the population increases many times - we are an very dependant on tourism for our economy.

If you ever visit Gotland you are always welcome to visit us, to take a look on our animals and tour our beatiful island!
