Print out this list and tick off all the things you need to do when you change your address - to ensure a smooth move

Have you discontinued these services:

  • Milk Delivery
  • Spring Water Delivery
  • Newspaper Delivery
  • Telephone
  • Gas & Electricity
  • Water

Have you notified your change of address to:

  • The Post Office for redirection of mail
  • Your bank to transfer accounts
  • The Electoral Registrar
  • Your Hire Purchase Company
  • Your Insurance Company to transfer your household insurance
  • Your Life Assurance Company
  • Your Car Insurance Company
  • Your Health Insurance Fund
  • The Principal of your children's school/s and received a letter from them regarding the status of your children in school
  • Your Shire Authority Rates
  • Stores, where you have charge accounts
  • Club Memberships, Sports etc
  • Publications to which you subscribe
  • Have your Doctor and Dentist recommend someone in town or area to which you are moving
  • Your solicitors, church group, employers, tax office, vehicle registration

Have you also:

  • Defrosted and cleaned your refrigerator
  • Are all appliances disconnected ready for removal
  • Arranged for Electricity and/or Gas Companies to disconnect any fittings from the supply (Budget Removals are not licenced to do this)
  • Have you removed and returned hired video tapes
  • Put aside items you don't want to take with you
  • Returned any tools, books, items you have borrowed
  • Taken down any curtains, blinds, TV ariels you intend to take with you
  • Put items into your personal luggage you want separate so they are not accidentally packed (maybe lock them in the glove box of your car)
  • Arranged someone to look after your children during the packing process? This can be a very stressful time for children.
  • Dismantled any "knock-down kit" furniture.
  • Disconnected your washing machine and drain all water.
  • Washed thoroughly any items that may be of interest to Quarantine/Agriculture, ie. mowers, garden tools, golf equipment, bicycles, etc.

A few DON'TS:

  • Don't forget to have your car key's with you at all times as they may be misplaced during the move.
  • Don't fail to advise if you are moving any valuable antiques, furs or paintings with your household goods. For our mutual protection, and for insurance purposes, notice in writing is requested.
  • Don't put breakables in drawers.
  • Don't put liquids in drawers (sauce bottles, perfumes, etc)
  • Don't overload drawers with linen, sheets and clothing - too much weight can damage furniture.
  • Don't water your pot plants on moving day.
  • Don't store perishable foods, such as cereals, flours, vegetable etc.
  • Don't forget to tell us everything you want moved. It's your responsibility to check before the vehicle drives off.
  • Don't polish your furniture prior to your move.

Ammunition, New or partially used cans of paint, Used paint brushes, Linseed Oil, LPG cylinders, Turpentine, Naptha, Cleaning fluids, Oily rags, Shoe-cleaning rags or pads, Polishing cloths, Aerosols of any kind, Vegetable oils, chemical sets

Now, one last look around:

  • Anything left behind? Have you checked the garden, shed, cupboards, garage, storage space in the roof, under the house?
  • No clothes still at the dry cleaners, or watch, rings at jewellers?
  • Nothing left in the lockers at clubs or schools?
  • Water heater turned off and drained?
  • No taps left running?
  • Light switches all turned off?
  • Windows and doors all locked?
  • Old house keys surrendered?
