Purpose of the Windows Security Officer 95/98
There are four general ways to manage access to Windows :
1. You can set passwords for users and thereby limit who can use the computer.
Set the Administrator's Password and add an administrator
to the Administrators List. The program will check this password when Windows boots if a user logs-in as an administrator.
Other users (not Administrators) will log-in without checking for a password. You may
set some restrictions for them.
Set the option "Always check password" on the page "Program Options" then the program
will check the password for all users when Windows boots . If a user does not have their
own password then the program will require the Administrator's Password.
2. You can set boot options to prevent anybody's access to Windows.
Boot options enables you to secure Windows booting :
By default Windows 9x enables the function keys on boot, these allow you
to control the boot process. For example pressing F5 while the "Starting Windows 95..." message is displayed will boot Windows in Safe Mode. The option "Disables interruption keys" allows you to disable the F5, F6 and F8 keys.
If you installed an upgrade version of Windows 9x, you can normally press F4
to boot your previous version of Windows. The option "Disables boot menu" allows you to disable the F4 key.
The option "Disables the Safe Mode startup warning" enables the setting suppress the safe
mode warning message when booting up, and bypasses the Startup menu.
By default Windows doesn't require a valid user name and password combination for a user
to create and use a local Windows machine. This functionality can be change to require this validation. The option "Require User's Validation for Windows Access" allows you to lock your computer with a password.
3. You can set restrictions for users.
On the page "User's Options" you can setup the desktops for users however you would like.
It offers administrative support for controlling which users are allowed to access your computer
and the level of access each user may have. You can choose to restrict access to several Control panel applet functions, including Display, Network, Passwords, Printer, and System.
4. You can designate an access time period for each user.
You can set an interval and a duration of an
user's working time. If you have set the duration for a user, this user can work only
for this amount of time each day. For example you have set the interval beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m. and for a duration of 60 minutes for your child. Your child can work any time between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.. They can work for 40 minutes and turn off the computer, then they can turn on the computer during this interval and work an additional 20 minutes. Also if you un-check some day then user won't work in this day of week.
New feature of the program allows you to set a long time period (even several years !) and the days
limitation (90 days) . Also when the user time period is expired , you can elongate it without your presence near
the user's computer ! The special utility generates passphrase that user have to enter when his time period is expired and Windows Security Officer 95/98 will set new time period automatically .
